Le miniere di Zolfo
The sulfur veins were discovered in 1866, then Ferdinand Capone d’Altavilla and Di Marzo of Tufo started the research. The sulfur mines accounted for the economic growth of the Altavilla territory and Irpinia became one of the most important centers of sulfur export but, at the end of the twentieth century, the area was hit by an irreversible crisis that caused the slow and inexorable decline of sulfur mines and the emigration of many Altavilla’s citizens.
