    Tufo
    FINE EXAMPLE OF INDUSTRIAL ARCHEOLOGY.

Tufo

ETIMOLOGY AND HISTORY

At the slopes of Monte Gloria, on the right side of Sabato, Tufo is located on a tuff hill, about 259 above sea level. The village has Lombard origins and was first documented in the IX century, when Prince Aione II decided to build a tower to protect the entire valley that, from Monte Terminio, leads to Sannio, as well as the capital of the Lombard princedom, Benevento. The stronghold was the epicenter of important battles during the Middle Ages, and it was strengthened and turned into a residence further on. Nowadays, it is still possible to see, between the walls of the noble house, the tower and part of the surrounding walls.
The village is renowned for the ancient Miniere di Marzo (Mines) named after their founder. These are sulfur mines discovered in 1866. Today they represent an excellent example of industrial archeology which integrates perfectly with the river environment. The entire complex includes the ancient Giardino Mill, which depends on the water of Sabato, and houses impressive machinery that was once used for the milling of the products. On the background, there is Palazzo di Marzo a noble palace accessible through a stone ladder. The medieval village features old streets and houses with typical stone portals. Today, the village is renowned for the Local Wine Fair, Greco di Tufo DOCG
