Chiesa di San Pantaleone
A few churches are mentioned by documents inside the Castle: Santo Stefano (1022), San Matteo (1190) and San Pantaleone (1293). In particular, the Church of San Pantaleone, probably founded by countess Berardessa, was a parish church and it was considered the most important church of Montoro, for centuries. In ancient times, the parish Church of San Nicolò was among the houses of the Lombard Castle. It was an “extra muros” of Montoro bishopric and it housed a little chapel dedicated to San Pantaleone, a doctor and a martyr. This Chapel is mentioned in the scrolls of Montevergine Archive (vol.87 n°26) which reveal its existence in 1283 and 1293. Later on,the parish church of San Pantaleone (built in AD 1480), was aggregated to San Leucio Church in Borgo di Montoro, after a decree from the Archbishop of Salerno, Monsignor Paglia, on May 23, 1838. At the beginning of the twentieth century (especially between the two World wars that changed the course of contemporary history) a Great Temple was built in this area, to remind the centuries-old protection of the Saint on this area. In 1950, the Church underwent refinement works with frescoes from the life and the martyrdom of the Saint.
