Le miniere di zolfo e il Mulino Giardino
The geomorphology of the soil with the presence of precious tuff volcanic rock, easily minable, represented for the inhabitants an important deposit, together with sulfur. The latter, in fact, became since the nineteenth century to the 60s, the mineral widely used thanks to the processing plants of Francesco Di Marzo and the Società anonima industrie minerarie (Mining Industries Limited Company -SAIM) by Federico Capone, in the nearby Altavilla still partially functioning. The mines of tuff were so active as to become one of the most important mining centers of the South, and over time they changed the lifestyle of the town, Tufo. The quarries underwent the post-war crisis and the closure of the quarries dates back to 1972 with the development of foreign markets, resulting in a decrease in population. Included in the program of "Exploitation and development of the area of Greco and Fiano wines and creation of the mining park of the old sulfur mines of Tufo and Altavilla along the Valley of Sabato," by the Mountain Community of Partenio, today the architectural complex is an important site of industrial archeology and a tourist attraction.
