Lago di S. Pietro – Aquilaverde
Site of Community Importance – Natura 2000. Beautiful artificial lake nestled in the Apennines of Campania , 460 m above sea level. The lake receives water from the creek Osento born in the territory of Lacedonia and has a good flow of water, especially in winter. In the sixties, Foggia port authority decided to make this reservoir to allow the collection waters from the stream to be used for irrigation in the lands of neighboring Apulia. The artificial reservoir has a capacity of maximum flood of 17,100,000 Mc and is bordered by the municipal boundaries of Monteverde, Aquilonia and Lacedonia, all member municipalities of the Mountain Community "Alta Irpinia". San Pietro lake or Aquilaverde (ie of Aquilonia - Monteverde) today is a place of peace and rare beauty thanks to the verdant surrounding pine forests and wetlands which host the passage of migratory fauna. Only the great barrier reminds us that these are the banks of a reservoir. Close to to the highway the shore is shallow and slopes gently into the water; the other side instead is characterized by large rock masses, topped by an abundant vegetation. Along the north-east side of the lake there is a large picnic area equipped to accommodate tourists and a children's playground.
