MUSEO DELL'ISTITUTO STATALE D'ARTE
The museum was opened in 2005 following a Memorandum of Understanding between the City of Calitri, the province of Avellino, the Superintendence for BAPPSAE and the Art Institute. The museum houses the works of the students of the State Institute of Art from 1959 to 2004 and has three sections: ceramics, wood, embroidery and lace. The ceramics section houses panels in polychrome majolica, vases realized on potter’s wheel, the services of crockery and modular panels with a variety of decorative motifs. The section dedicated to ceramics assumes high importance as in Calitri area this activity is witnessed since 1573. The Processing and decoration of the objects have evolved thanks to the raw materials offered by a land full of blue, grays and red clay used for the realization of various objects ranging from bricks and dishes, to terracotta heat-resistant pots. The art of decoration until the twentieth century was undeveloped and was limited to simple motifs consisting of vertical lines and points that decorated the circumference of the artifacts and motifs reasons such as rose and some noble crests. The most used color was blue, then brown, yellow and green; with the Art Institute, thanks to the presence of teachers from various Italian towns (Florence, Urbino, Naples, Lecce) there is an evolution of artistic techniques. In the section of wood you can admire an inlaid panel with a view of Calitri during 1600s , a mosaic inspired by a Mirò’s painting by, tableware in different woods, inlays and carvings, cabinets and containers made on the lathe.
