MUSEO DELLA CERAMICA DEL BORGO CASTELLO
The ceramics museum, established on Sept. 29, 2008, is based in the restored rooms of Borgo Castello; exhibition spaces, stores and services are articulated along beautiful trails that meander through the historic factories, providing an atypical example of urban space turned into a museum. The exhibition, established in the buildings of the whole area between Via Castello and via Madonna delle Ripe, includes historical sections and spaces for education aimed at documenting the varied production of ceramics in Calitri and the Upper Ofanto Valley from ancient times onwards. It is a long path from Fossakultur in Oliveto Cairano during Roman times, from the half medieval majolica in Santa Maria in Elce and San Zaccaria to the Renaissance majolica, and leads, finally, to the modern era and contemporary art. A specific section of the museum is dedicated to producing handcrafted terracotta used in the building sector. Moreover, there is a section focused on industrial ceramics no longer in use because of the development of materials technology, the many objects and exhibits that have characterized the traditional material local culture. The collection is still in constant evolution and transformation. It includes artifacts found during the complex restoration and the related excavations by the Superintendence; a substantial part of the materials comes also from donations and loans made by cultural associations, voluntary organizations and private citizens.
