CENOBIO BIZANTINO
Around the year 990 AD, the Byzantine monks from Epirus founded in Ceraseto - so called because it was full of cherry trees - the Abbey of St. John the Baptist. The Monastery, situated on the slopes of the mountain, was a safe and almost unassailable haven. The Cenobio, directed by renowned scholars and humanists, was one of the most important monasteries of greek monasticism in Southern Italy. You can visit Cenobio Bizantino on appointment during the winter, while from June 15 to September 15 it is open every day from 16.30 to 19.30. Contact the mayor Ferdinando Palazzo.
